Microsoft and Intel join forces to defend against cryptojacking

Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint extends its use of Intel Threat Detection (TDT) technology to enable processor-based crypto-mining machine learning detection.

The two companies have teamed up to tackle the growing threat of cryptojacking, also known as malicious crypto-mining, where cybercriminals install malware on devices to use their power and resources to mine cryptocurrencies or steal cryptocurrency wallets. This method of attack can also slow down computers considerably and prevent them from functioning normally.

Intel TDT equips endpoint detection and response solutions with CPU telemetry and machine learning heuristics for advanced memory analysis, cryptojacking, and ransomware detection. The company claims that these are the only processor-based malware behavior monitoring capabilities on the market that go beyond signature and file-based techniques.

Karthik Selvaraj, senior security research manager at Microsoft, pointed out that cryptocurrency mining has been on the rise in recent years, thanks to the growing value of virtual currencies, the growing popularity of different types of crypto. -currency and the volatility of these new markets.

“As cryptocurrency prices rise, many opportunistic attackers now prefer to use cryptojacking over ransomware,” he said. “The risks to organizations have increased as attackers deploy coin miners as a payload for malware campaigns.”

Threat detection capabilities are native to Intel Core and vPro platforms and work seamlessly with EDR solutions without the need for installation or deployment configuration.

Earlier this month, Microsoft announced that the Surface Laptop 4 will ship with an 11th-generation Intel Core chip or an AMD Ryen Microsoft Surface Edition processor, following a decision the company made in March to take effect. supports configurations from multiple hardware vendors. The machine, which was designed for hybrid work, was reportedly up to 70% faster than the Surface Laptop 3.
